This is Ches, and believe it or not he is a 24 year old cat!  He belongs to Mrs Frances Young.  Here he is with his companion Pip.

Mrs Young used to live in London.  20 years ago she was feeding a big black cat who strangely disappeared for a few months.  When he returned he brought Ches back with him.  Mr & Mrs Young took him in as a stray and kept him in the house.  He was very timid but eventually started to come and look over the balcony.  He then got brave and would sit at the top of the stairs but would run away if you went near him.  Then one day he suddenly walked into the room and jumped onto Mrs Yougs lap!  Much to the disgust of their other cat Brandy, who walloped him!  After becoming friends Brandy tried to teach Ches how to hunt - even bringing in live mice for him - but he never took to it.  He once saw Brandy catch a pigeon so he decided to have a go - he jumped on the pigeons back, which then took off, leaving Ches hanging from his back!!! After many feathers lost from the pigeon Ches landed with a bump in the garden!

Until recently, the only time Ches had to go to the vets was when he broke his leg.  But even with a cast on he still managed to jump a 6 foot fence!  All the neighbours had to go out and help find him.  Ches moved to Somerset with Mr & Mrs Young which he seemed to really enjoy but has been living in Rainham recently due to his owner, Mr Young, passing away.

Unfortunately Ches was knocked over recently by his companion Pip and a trip to the emergency vets followed.  It was suspected that Ches had dislocated his right hip and xrays confirmed this.  The emergency vets put his hip back in place and Ches was sent home for strict rest with a warning that the hip may pop back out.  Two days later Ches was brought in to us here at Wigmore to see Sylvester, and as warned, his hip had dislocated again.  Obviously a general anaesthetic was a risk due to his age but Sylvester felt surgery needed to be done to put his hip back in place and it had to be secured with internal stitches.  Unbelievably, the very next day Ches was walking well on his leg!  He was eating well and taking his medication with no problems.  Two weeks on and Ches is doing fantastically.  The wound is healing well and he even managed to scratch his ear with his bad leg!  Here are some photos from his latest check up with us and as you can see he is a very handsome man for his age and his fur is growing back lovely.

This is Tipsy - isn't he handsome?

Tipsy had a severe eczema, and as part of his treatment he has needed to wear some cool outfits!

Everything is progressing well and here is what Tipsy's owner, Mr Lewis, has to say....

Tipsy's skin condition started in September 2011 and appeared to be a very rare injection reaction.  First of all Mr & Mrs Lewis tried using a buster collar to stop Tipsy from scratching and biting at the problem area.  As you can see from the picture below, the collar had to be worn in reverse, but unfortunately Tipsy's neck became really sore.

This skin complaint continued and one of our vets, Sylvester, suggested to Mr & Mrs Lewis that they try using a babies t-shirt!

The first two attempts were babies t-shirts from BHS, but unfortunately they were too big and Tipsy just walked straight out of them.  Next to try was a 0-3 month t-shirt, shown in the photo above and below, and this has worked perfectly.  Tipsy does not seem at all bothered by it and has not even attempted to scratch or lick the affected areas.

Here is Tipsy at his latest consultation with Mr Rawlins.  He is doing really well.  The outfits, along with the treatment, have done the trick!  His neck has almost completely healed and is progressing nicely.

Mr Lewis has found a website in China that manufactures clothes specifically for cats.  The arm (or leg!) holes are in a slightly better position for comfort.  A photo of the special outfit is to follow.
